Gabriel lectured in history at Normal College, [Coleg Normal] in Bangor, Gwynedd and at Caerleon teacher training college in Monmouthshire, both of which are now part of the University of Wales. His papers indicate that he was at Bangor from 1912-1916, that he married in 1917 and took up a position at Caerleon from ca. 1917-1961. His successor at Normal College was Sir Frederick Rees, who was later Principal of University College Cardiff. J.R. Gabriel corresponded regularly with Sir Frederick, discussing, in his letters, personal and college matters, and in particular their shared research interest in aspects of the Civil War period in Wales.
