| Description | Heartily recommends Mr Thomas Brereton to be one of the City’s representatives in the next Parliament by dwelling on his excellent qualities and his family affinities with the then Lord Brereton (a note added to the letter, which is really a copy for dispersal, seems to throw some doubt on this relationship). Shakerley, who was brother to the first Sir Watkin's second wife, was a gentleman of considerable influence who had himself represented Chester in the Parliamnets of Queen Anne; but his words did not carry much weight this time, the two M.P.’s for Chester in 1722 being Sir Richard Grosvenor and Sir Henry Bunbury. The latter has no date, but the Mayor’s name being given as Tho: Wilson, fixes the year as 1721 (History of Chester, 1815, p. 251). It is endorsed: “To Thomas Lloyd, Esqr. At Gwerhayled, near Overton”, and franked by Sir Watkin Wms Wynn (for the Gwernhaulod family, who evidentally held some property ay Chester, see Hist. Powys Fadog, iii, 356-7) |
