W.I.L.P.F. - Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, pamphlets, periodicals and press cuttings for the period 1926-43, principally concerning disarmament and the peace movements. The main organisations involved are :
1. N.W.W.P.C.: agenda, minutes, correspondence, duplicated material, and press cuttings. Includes pamphlets "Year's Work", 1928-43.
2. W.I.L.: minutes, papers relating to the 7th and 9th International Conferences (1932 and 1937) at which latter Mrs. Thoday was a delegate.
3. W.I.L.P.F.: minutes, papers relating to the 7th and 9th International Conferences (1932 and 1937)
4. Council of Action for Peace and Reconstruction : papers relating thereto : 1936, 1938-39
5. World Disarmament Conference at Geneva, 1932-33; press cuttings, reports of committees, speeches of delegates, the "Journal" of the Conference, etc.
As well as domestic affairs, these categories include material on the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War, the Italo-Abyssinian War; women's position in South Africa, Japan, India, etc. Special topics which figure prominently in the collection include : the North Wales Peace Pilgrimage, 1926; the campaigns run by the N.W.W.P.C. and the W.I.L. to secure the passage of resolutions and organisation of petitions concerning and on behalf of the International Disarmament Declaration of 1930-31, the British Draft Disarmament Convention of 1933, etc; the position of pacifists in Germany, 1933; the Arms Commission, 1936; etc; etc.
The collection is arranged chronologically in the original files. Acknowledgement is paid to Dr. Susan Brock of the 1974-75 Archives Diploma class, for her help in the sorting and arranging of the papers.
