| Disgrifiad | They consist of a 10% sample of summaries of the household budgets of working-class families throughout the United Kingdom, following official enquiries in 1904 and 1937-38. The covering letter from the Ministry to F.P.J. (see no. 26411) mentions the dispatch of the 1937-38 documents in boxes numbered 1-42, and of the 1904 documents in boxes numbered 43 and 44; the boxes actually surviving and now deposited here by Miss M. McCririck, are numbered as follows : 1937-38 -1-4;6;10-16;18-21;26-31;33-36;40. (27 boxes). 1904 : 2 boxes, unnumbered. The contents have been re-boxed. The 1904 expenditure statements consist of single sheets; those relating to the 1937-38 enquiry are fairly thick files of papers. It will be noted that date order has not been strictly observed in the following descriptions, as it is important that the covering letter referred to above, and the 1949 descriptive report of the later enquiry, should be perused first. |
