| Disgrifiad | During the First World War Glanllyn, on the shores of Llyn Tegid, Y Bala, was used as the headquarters for an experiment to see whether seals could be trained to detect enemy submarines in the open seas. The mammals used were no ordinary seals, but ones more used to performing on the stage, with a number also from London Zoo. Unfortunately it wasn’t an easy task to control them – in order to keep an eye on the seals they had to be painted with bright colours and large amounts of fish were needed to be given as rewards. The experiment proved that their instincts were more food-orientated than to track submarines, and the plan never came into fruition. |
