AdminHistory | J. Gwynn Williams, in his book "The University College of North Wales : Foundations 1884-1927" refers to early days of the teaching of modern languages at the University. French was the most popular subject, but there was a great impetus from the direction of the Senate to increase the number of students studying German and by 1912 the numbers were almost equal to those studying French. Professor Keith Spalding, Professor of German and Teutonic Philology at Bangor from 1950-1980, whose name appears frequently in the minutes, was a distinguished scholar and lexicographer. |
