TeitlPurchase deed of Gwern y Buarth, Llwyn Madoc, Tyddyn Mederith David ap Howell, &c., in the parish of Llandysil, co. Mont., consideration, £1,400.
DisgrifiadThe buyer was Dr. Robert Morgan of Llanddyfnan [not yet a Bishop and living at Llanbedr Goch], and the seller Evan Davies of Llanddewi Ystradenny in Radnorshire; livery and seisin on 22 June, with 14 witnesses at Gwern y Buarth and 16 at Llwyn Madoc. Charles Jones of Llandysil was named as his £lawful attorney" by Evan Davies in a special instrument.
This second doct. (64) contains the interesting news that Evan Davies had bought the lands from Thomas Lloyd of Aberbechan who happened to be Dr. Robert Morgan's grandfather on the mother's side (Pedigree of Mont. Families...printed for the Powys-Land Club...1888, p. 83), and a direct descendant, in the senior line, of the family that had held Gwern y Buarth since the days of Meilir Gryg.
This restoration of the Llandysil property to one of the blood of the ancient owners must have been a particular pleasure to R.M.
Allied in interest to the above, but of much earlier date, was the release (14 March, 1596-7) of a £5 rent-charge in Rhandir, Llandysil parish, by Morris ap Meredith ap David ap Hoell to Thomas [ap] David Lloyd, who was no other that Dr. Robert Morgan's grandfather, Thomas Lloyd of Gwern y Buarth and Aberbechan. The indenture of release is accompanied by a bond of obligation in £100 by Morris ap Meredith, in which a Walter John of Montgomery joins (65-66).
Of similar interest is the release and bond by which Humphrey ap Griffith of Bryntalog granted Pen-y-llwyn in Rhandir to the same Thomas [ap] David Lloyd, 1 Dec., 1599 (67-68).
