In 59-62 the Irish historian Edmund Curtis discusses the fortunes of an Ancient Welsh family in Irelend, and encloses an article (63) on the Fitz Rery'e of co. Dublin which he had sent to one of the learned journals. 79 is from J.H. Davies then (1918) Registrar of U.C.W., hoping that Sir John would become a member of a committee to help select material for N.L.W. (he is a bit critical of Mr Ballinger's outlook and methods of selection); 112 is from our present Principal then at Swansea (1923), discussing religious activities in that College, and (changing the subject) putting some points of criticism on the Honours Arts scheme at Bangor; in 1261-30 Dr Gwenogfryn Evans is airing some of his Catraeth and Doomsday Book heresies. Sir Charles Firth (139). In 148 a firm of designers want full details of an Archdruid’ s ceremonial head-dress as worn (they say) about 700 - 800 B.C. Under G Mr Willoughby Gardner has several letters about archaeologicel questions (153-162). The H. section is more varied: an inordinately long letter from Henry Higgins of Trefriw (171); a short one from Sir Robert Horne (later Viscount) once on the staff of U.C.N.W. (182); interesting posers about inscriptions from Mr Harold Hughes (193-197); a letter of introduction from Professor C.H. Herford of Manchester - Sir John's sometime colleague at U.C.W. - to Herbert Wright (Jan., 1916), known to us for many years as Professor H.G. Wright (186). Sir John Morris-Jones answers congratulations (226), and goes deeply into some problems of the Gildas - Maelgwn Gwynedd generation (227). The Rev R.W. Jones of Holyhead would like some solid facts about the Puleston family as a background to his projected biography of the Rev Puleston Jones (234). E.W. Lovegrove proves himself a well-informed historian and archaeologist (258-260). Professor Marshall of U.C.W. (269-285); a learned note by Allen Mawer, and some searching queries (287); Charles Morgan is curious about place - and personol names in the Radyr district (292A - 297). Arthur Price, of which 362 contains a violent outburst against an effusion on the Puritan movement in 1920 by the present cataloguer; the outburst, in a lower key, had already appeared in the Churah Times (cp. letter 411). There are purgent words in some of the letters about Principal Reichel and Archbishop Edwards. Under R come the letters of J.F Rees (370-380). Dr William Rees (383), and a goodly series (398-440) from the cataloguer, when at Maesteg, relating to research work, publications, and scholastic appointments. L.J. Roberts (445-6); an interesting group from Professor W. Rhys Roberts (447-456); two letters from Caroline Skeel (468-9); several from Henry Taylor of Flint (476-483); thirteen from the late A.S. Turberville, for some years lecturer in the Dept. of History at U.C.N.W., 501-507 are from T.F. Tout; the first refers to "a competent young Welshman from Bagillt” who was working at Welsh history in the Univ. of Manchester; no doubt he was J. Goronwy Edwards later Bursar of Jesus in Oxford, and just appointed (1948) Director of the Inst. of Hist. Research in London. |
