TeitlLetter from Robert Owen at Beaumaris to John Owen of Penrhos
DisgrifiadWorthy Cousin'. The three young men are with the scrivener who came to them to the school from ten to eleven and from five to six in the evening. The writer ordered it that the scrivener should come to school to prevent the loss of time which, had he taught anywhere else could not be avoided. The scrivener could teach them to cypher if he had the language but the want of that renders him more incapable of teaching them to cypher than to write, for in their wrtiting he shows them what is amiss and with his pen shown them how to rectify it. William Bold does very much want a pair of shoes. The writer caused Richard Roberts to make him a pair, which, when they were brought him, R.R. would not sell under 3s.6d. The writer thought that too great a rate and therefore sent them back. Begs Owen to supply him with a pair from home. Cousin Hugh Williams sent Cousin Robert a cock, which he out of joy stuffed with white bread so that the cock (which had he been better handled might have done better service) had much ado to gain his first battle, and against a pitiful little cock; and at the second battle was beaten.
The young men shall write to Owen next week
