TeitlCorrespondence in which Thomas Asheton Smith of Vaenol is negotiating with the Marquess the lease of Plas Newydd and the demesne, having originally offered to purchase the whole of the Anglesey estate.
DisgrifiadHis Lordship readily accepts him as a tenant on a lease of 7 years in the first place, at a rent of £750, and by the Summer of 1844 the Vaenol family is in full occupation of the house and proposing several minor alterations to the fabric. In August 1848 however, Smith announces his intention to return home "over the water" on the grounds of his wife's health, and his notice is accepted as expiring on Lady Day 1849 (3082-3126). Stangely enough, there is no mention in any of these papers of Smith's reasons for applying for the tenancy. A few letters from Lady Anglesey to Thomas Beer in 1848 stress the need for an all round economy in domestic expenditure, reductions in the establishment and the prompter payment of tradesmen's bills (3119, 3125, 3126). Letter no. 3130 is a request on behalf of the Weslayan Methodists at Holyhead for the lease of a plot of ground at Llaingoch on which to build a chapel; the signatories are Methuselah Thomas, Wesleyan Minister, and Edward Hughes, Bank Manager.
