| AdminHistory | In 1995 a campaign was mounted to nominate R.S. Thomas for Nobel Prize for Literature for 1996.
The nomination process, which required support from literary organizations, writers and academics both in Wales and internationally, was coordinated by a Steering Committee set up by Yr Academi Gymreig / The Welsh Academy and received active support from The New Welsh Review (which was sponsored at the time by the Welsh Academy and the University of Wales Association for the Study of Welsh Wrtiting in English, later A.W.W.E.)
The nomination received much support and gained attention from the press both in Wales nad London. However, while the nomination attracted much new interest in R.S. Thomas's poetry, the nomination was not successful, due in part perhaps to the fact that the Nobel Prize in 1995 was awarded to Seamus Heaney. |
