TitleLast will and testament of a brother of the first Sir Richard Bulkeley
Descriptionabout whom the Pedigrees are altogether silent. His neme was Rowland; the will was made on 16 Febr, 1544-45; he most distinctly refers to his brother Sir Richard (to whom he bequeaths two kine and his ring which had an amethyst stone therein), and to his brother John Bulkeley, Doctor of Divinity (to whom he gives his best black velvet, jacket and his best doublet of crimson satin) - it is curious that neither Foster's Alumi (for Oxford) nor Venn's Alumni (for Cambridge), nor de Neve's Fasti has the slightest reference to this Dr John Bulkeley / (Ormerod, however, makes him rector of Cheadle from about 1525 to 1545 – Hist. Cheshire, 111, 631) His brother Robert is mentioned in the Pedigrees as ancestor of the Gronant branch - he gets a black furred gown and a satin coat; to his nephew Richard, son of Sir Richard, and soon to be the second Knight himself, he gives his best leathern coat, a jerkin of black velvet, and the takings of the "British mylne" (by Beaumaris); to his godson Rowland, son of his nephew Bulkeley [who afterwards became rector of Llandegfan] he bequeathed the takings of “the Kyghley" [Cichle Mill, although the word mylne does not actually occur] for his life. All his other goods and chattels, movable and immovable, to his wife Ellen, who is also named exccutrix. The contents of the document seem to point to a prosperous merchant of London, although all the witnesses, except one [William Bulkeley, probably the ancestor of the Porthamel branch and his brother] have Welsh names - Christopher James, priest, curate of Beaumaris; Lewis ap Ieuen ap Rees; Richard ap Einion; Richard ap John ap Robert, alias Richard Tailor. The will was certainly proved in London, 28 March,1545-6
