TitleAcquittance by Isaac Thorneton, [second] husband of Dorothy Thorneton, late wife of Richard Bulkeley, esq.; has received £150, due and payable on Michaelmas last past, from Thomas, Lord Viscount Bulkeley, in persunce of an award made by John Griffith of Ll?n [Cefn Amwlch] for the composing of differences between the Bulkeleys of Beaumaris and the Bulkeleys of Cheshire.
DescriptionThe truth is that the third Sir Richard Bulkeley (d.1621) had for some mysterious reasons effectively ignored the interests of his children by his first wife [Katherine, daughter of Sir William Davenport of Cheshire], of whom the eldest was the "Richard Bulkeley, esq." of this doct., and had devised all his Welsh estates to his eldest son by the second marriage [with Mary, daughter of Lord Burgh], and even granted to his second wife a good part of his Cheshire lands in jointure, an arrangement which could not be touched till Dame Mary's death about 1640, when the award became at last operative. This document, to be understood clearly, must be read in the light of Griffith: Pedigrees, 42, and especially of Ormerod: Hist of Cheshire, III,621-628; neither Griffith nor Ormerod seems to have heard of Dorothy's second marriage. Thornton seems to have come to Beaumaris to receive the £150, as all the witnesses were from that district, inclucing Henry Davies of Penmon and William Luke of Llandegfan
