TitleLast will and testament of Richard Johnson of Beaumaris, ironmonger.
DescriptionHe gives in great detail particulars of debts (over £60) he owes to his brother Rowland, to George Harpur of the city of Chester, and to the heirs of Robert Wall, deceased, his uncle, of the same city; and indeed so much is he troubled by his commitments that he bequeaths practically all his interests in Beaumaris to his brother in the hope that he will discharge them. References to his deceased father, also named Richard Johnson, to his mother Elizabeth Fletcher, to Morgan Lloyd of Beaumaris, deceased, and to his base reputed son, also Richard Johnson, born of his wife Elizabeth before his intermarriage. Indeed, provided that this son and his mother covenant to discharge the debts before 1 July, 1614, the bequest to Rowland Johnson is revoked. Rowland enjoined to have "care and feeling" for the upbringing of the boy; his wife Elizabeth made sole executor; his mother Fletcher, Thomas Boulton, and George Steele, his brother-in-law and notary public, to be supervisors of the will and to assist his wife to carry out its provisions. In an added memorandum he remembers the debts owing to him, and names Rowland ap Robert his cousin, and refers also to the arrest of John Owen of Trefeilir for money which had been detained by that gentleman. Will proved at Bangor on 6 Aug., 1610. The names figuring in this will prove how thoroughly English was the atmosphere of Beaumaris at the beginning of the 17th century
