TitleIndenture describing the sad financial straits of Francis Bulkeley of Llangefni and Porthamel who committed suicide by shooting himself in 1714
Description By his will dated 18 Sept. in that year, Francis Bulkeley had devised to four trustees his lands at Penmynydd, the manor of Porthamel and all other his hereditaments on condition that they paid off the mortgages upon, satisfying all judgements on record against him, &c., but if Richard, Lord Bulkeley, should within six months after Francis Bulkeley's decease pay all debts, and indemnify the trustees, that all the above interests should be conveyed to him; should he neglect to do this, then sufficient of the premises were to be sold to defray the debts, and the residue unsold should be conveyed to his Lordship. His Lordship evidently neglected to do so; then followed tedious proceedings at the Court of Chancery, with the result that Lord Bulkeley became the "best purchaser" of the Porthamel-Llangefni interests for £21,600. By this present indenture he institutes Maurice Lewis of Trysglwyn and the Middle Temple to be his lawful attorney to pay the £139 debt owed by Francis Bulkeley to William Robyns of Bangor, who had obtained judgement at the Court of Great Sessions for that sum. Cp. Francis Bulkeley’s debt to Thomas Holland, rector of Llangeinwen, and a similar course of procedure by Lord Bulkeley (Bangor MS.1920, xxii)
