TitleAbstract of the the title of Sir Hugh Williams to the Friars' Estate
DescriptionTraces the sad decline in fortune of the Whyte family who were important enough in mid-seventeenth century to intermarry with the Bulkeleys, but its resources were frittered away by John Holland [of the Berw family] who had married Jane, sole heiress of the Henry Whyte who had died in 1728. Eventually the estate was purchased by Edward Williams, second husband of Jane [Owen], Viscountess Bulkeley, but was later mortgaged to Dr Hugh Owen of Shrewsbury [who was great grandson to the famous Hugh Owen of Bronclydwr]. Ultimately the estate was redeemed by Sir Hugh Williams, second husband of Emma, Viscountess Bulkeley, for a sum of £4,000, this being the "proper money" supplied by his step-son, Thomas James, 7th Viscount Bulkeley. The opinions of two counsel are subscribed, viz., that of John Spranger on June 24, 1776, and that of Henry Atherton of Lincoln's Inn on 31 May, 1785
