| Description | A list of freeholders’ names (who were also Lord Bulkeley’s tenants) who voted for Sir George Warburton and Mr Cholmondeley; also a list of freeholders who voted against them, or did not vote at all. Refers to lands in Cheadle, Timperley, and Whatcroft (properties which had about 1668-9 reverted from the Bulkeleys of Cheshire to the Bulkeleys of Anglesey and held by them till about 1756). Voters for: Cheadle (16), Timperley (12), Whatcroft (5); against Cheadle (8) and 5 which did not vote. One of the latter was a James Cheadle: one wonders whether he was of the same family as the Sir Thomas Cheadle of Civil War days whose son Richard killed young Colonel Bulkeley on the Lavan Sands, and whether J.G.'s attitude in 1710 had anything to do with the happenings of generations before. Incidentally, it will be found that it was the two Tories Warburton and Cholmondeley that were elected for co. Cheshire in 1710 |
