| Description | Thanks his Lordship for sending him a copy of the votes recorded at the “Anglesey parliamentary election of the October previous, and in return gives a detailed account of a French privateer's visit to Holyhead and its vicinity, its loss in a storm, and vents a hope that the arms taken from it will be used for the defence of Penmon and Holyhead. Describes other fearful results of the storm. Adds the news that “Madame Vinegar”, widow of Henry Price Fitzgerald of Bodowyr has taken as second husband Rowland Jones of Treffos, using very uncomplimentary language about both of them. He was almost surely Owen Lloyd, rector of Llandyfrydog (since July, 1708 - A. Ivor Pryce: Hist. Dioc., 11, 16) and installed in the Bangor second canonry (Browne Willia, pp. 75-176). If so, Mr J.N. Griffith is very incorrect in his Pedigrees, 103, where he makes Owen Lloyd a son of Thomas Lloyd, instead of the fourth son of David Lloyd, and gives 1714 as the year of his death, instead of 1715. It still remains a mystery why a rector of Llandyfrydog, and a member of the Llwydiarth family, should write from Llanidan. It is tempting (as an alternative) to look upon the writer of the Letter as a younger member of the Lloyd family of Lligwy and Llanidan, but the Pedigrees, 135, do not support such a theory, nor was there a single freeholder of the name Lloyd from Llanidan voting in the Parliamentary election of 1708 (Baron Hill 5525) |
