| Description | Jekyll was a prominent Whig lawyer, though quite independent in outlook, who rose to be Master of the Rolls from 1717 to 1738. He had been one of the chief managers of the Commons’ attack upon Sacheverell, and when on circuit in the Wrexham district very soon afterwards was witness to the tremendous feeling worked up in favour of the high Tory clergyman (Richards: Piwritaniaeth a Pholitics, 127-129). In fact, he ordered the indictment of a clergyman, a curate, who preached such doctrines before him, but the Grand Jury threw the bill out.
