| Description | Descriptive verse bearing upon the chief personalities at the Yorkshire Parliamentary election, 1710 (no date is given but a collation of the names with the M.P.'s elected as given in Return of Members of Parliament, 1696-1878, pp.25-26, leave no doubt that that election is the one referred to). A good proportion of the candidates, successful and otherwise, come under the satiric lash of the writer. E.g. Sir William Strickland, one of the unsuccessful candidates for the county, does not escape being reminded that he was "descended from ye old Cromwellian Breed", a reference to the two Stricklands of the Commonwealth period (D.N.B., LV, 54-56); he has even stronger terms for the son, successful at Malton (p.8). The verses are preceded by a kind of index to the pseudonyms used in the text. Carbono was a "Mr Joyson, a Gentleman raised from a mighty small beginning by coal mines, was High Sherif of Yorkshire in 1708", and is the subject of grandiloquent sarcasm, pp.9-1., It must be remembered that Yorkshire returned at that period 30 members, what between county and boroughs |
