Compositions in English These consist in the main of society verse, courtly songs and miscellaneous satire of the type prevalent in the early seventeenth century. There are several items of great historical interest - the elegy on the Lord Stanhope who died at Christ Church Oxford in 1625; the elegy of the death of James I composed by Mr Morley of Christ Church; the elegy of the death of one of the earls of Pembroke; an incomplete elegy by Dr Corbet, very likely the divine who became Bishop of Oxford, 1624, on the late Lord Sr William Howard Baron of Effingham; a long elegy on the death of Sir John Burroughes; an eelgy on the death of the first child of Charles I etc. |
