TitleDiary of William Thomas Bason
DescriptionThe diary mostly contains Bason's missionary activities and his views on social injustice. The first and last few pages contain what seem to be notes for sermons or ideas for sermons .
Comments on the terrible morality in Hengoed, children without any decent clothes, young men gambling their money and businessmen stating that morals have no place where they work. Bason is clearly shocked by this- "May the Lord save us from such a state of things" (12 Sept 1912).
Bason talks again of his disgust towards capital punishment after arguing with a commercial traveller about the "barbarism" that morning (29 Jan 1913).
Has a conversation with a young shunter, telling him it would be wrong for him as a Christian to join the army (16 April 1913).
Entry contains Bason's feelings concerning his sinful and vile thoughts (3 Aug 1913). No details are mentioned of what these thoughts are.
News of a baby girl (Helen) that was born to Bason and his wife (15 Sept 1913). Bason mentions that his wife's life was in danger.
Talks of the explosion at Sengenydd, where four hundred and thirty nine men lost their lives, stating that "I have never seen such a sight in my life as what I saw on top of the pit" (14 Oct 1913).
