AdminHistoryDr Theodore Lewald was a senior Civil Servant who had a prominent role in the Berlin Olympics. Following the Olympics, Lewald did not retire, but rather, was coerced into leaving his post because he was of Jewish descent. Dr Lewald did survive the war.

Lewald passed this letter to a schoolteacher, Dr Dorothea Wegle, who was one of a number of upper middle class Germans who did not support the Nazi movement. She had become known locally for her opposition to the Nazi regime which eventually led to her being reported and forced to resign her post as a teacher. Dr Lewald hoped that giving the letter to Dorothea Wegle might save her life if she was stopped by the Gestapo.
AcquisitionThe original letter was placed on deposit at the Archives Department by Mrs Renata Ellis Jones in 2012. The original letter was returned to the owner on 15 August 2014. The Department still holds a photocopy of the original.
