TitleCopy of the last will and testament of John Griffith Lewis
DescriptionVery detailed and comprehensive; many lands and interests to dispose of. Chief beneficiaries were his grandchildren Hugh and Alice Jones, children of Richard Jones by Margaret Hughes. When he grew to man's estate, Hugh Jones was known as Hugh Jones of Trefollwyn, coroner for Anglesey, and father of John Jones who married the Hampton heiress. Other substantial legatees were his grandchildren at Bodafon, sons of his daughter Elizabeth. But this will uncovers a large family of which the Pedigrees take no cognisance - his brother Rees Griffith Lewis, another brother William. Rees had a daughter Catherine married to Edward Owen, of whom J.G.L. had a high opinion, and who is entrusted with responsible duties; Grace Verch Rees was another daughter; Thomas Edwards was son to Edward Owen. Money were due to J.G.L. on bonds signed by the ill-fated Francis Bulkeley of Porthamel; he was important enough for the Hon. Robert Bulkeley, younger brother of the third Viscount Bulkeley, to make a deed of mortgage to him. Finally, he did not forget gifts of charity to half-a-dozen Anglesey parishes - particulars will be found in the Endowed Charities Report, Anglesey, 1697.
