Description | Undoubtedly the most piquant item here is an appeal by Edward Jones of Pen-y-garnedd, Sir John's maternal grandfather, dated 17 April, 1845, for information about a Peter Foulkes, a London gentleman who was supposed to have died about 1693 — where was his family living when he embarked for New Jersey, U.S.A. ? It was addressed to the "manager of the Register Office Next of Kin London", and was rather a tall order, more than 150 years after the presumed death. Presumably, nothing was ever heard of the matter; Sir John in his short autobiography (paper 17) does refer to an unsubstantiated tradition of some arian mawr in the family, but not on the Edward Jones side, rather on the Edeyrnion side of the first Edward Lloyd. The remaining items are very various: a cutting from the Methodist Recorder (Sept. 19, 1907) eulogising the good works of the Llanfyllin circuit, of which Pen-y-garnedd was a component member; a record of gifts towards the Pen-y-garnedd repairs and re-construction in 1914; and an illustrated programme of the "cutting of the first sod" of the Tanat Valley Light Railway by the Countess of Powis (Sept.12, 1899). There are several letters from the Erw Deg family (Pen-y-bont), and letters from C.R. Jones of Llanfyllin, the Congregational and Liberal stalwart, about the Pen-y-garnedd Inn license, how it was refused once, but granted later, (December, 1894 all this to Sir John's father in Liverpool). Also, plan and elevation of Bryndifyr by Mr T. Ridge.
