Description | Arranged in six files, with compartments in each for each letter of the alphabet. The procedure adopted in this catalogue is to have one number for the individual file, and separate numbers for each letter contained in it. The subjects touched upon are multifarious, but in the main they touch upon some aspect of History. The writers are practically all in search of something: pageant-makers in search of background; Americans in search of ancestors; graduates in search of subjects for theses; local history pundits in search of facts; authors soliciting opinions of their books. Naturally, there are many letters from friends - fellow-students in Oxford, old colleagues at the U.C.W., sometime members of the staff at U.C.N.W.
Note : Particularly important are the short summaries of answers given usually on the top left-hand corner of the letter of inquiry. These summaries were Sir John's substitutes for drafts and carbon copies. |
