| Description | A compilation of the papers of five individuals, being members of the Paget family of Plas Newydd, Anglesey and Beaudesert, Staffordshire.
The papers range in date between 1842 and 1975 and contain a variety of documents, from scrapbooks, diaries, correspondence, illuminated addresses to photograph albums, vouchers, account books and invitations. Unlike the Plas Newydd Papers (also held at Bangor University, Archives and Special Collections), which contain material mostly relating to the administration of the Anglesey estate, the Paget Papers throw light upon the personal lives of family members, their interests and social circles. |
| AdminHistory | - Almeric Hugh Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough was born in London on the 14th of March 1861. He was the son of General Lord Alfred Henry Paget C.B. and Cecilia Wyndham; educated at Harrow; married his first wife Pauline Whitney in 1895 and his second wife, Edith Starr Millar in 1921; he had 5 daughters. He was the President of the Eastern Provincial Division of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1909-1946; President of the National Unionist Organisation, 1928-1929; Parliamentary Provincial Whip for Eastern and Home Counties, 1911-1946; Fellow of Corpus Chrisit College, Cambridge; President of the Royal Society of St. George; High Sherriff of Suffolk, 1909; M.P. for Cambridge, 1910-1917.
- Henry Cyril Paget, 5th Marquess of Anglesey was born on the 16th June 1875, the only son of Henry, Fourth Marquess of Anglesey by his second wife, Blanche Curwen Boyd, and great grandson of the 1st Marquess. He was educated at Eton and by tutors abroad; married on the 20th of January 1898, Lilian Florence Maud, eldest daughter of Sir George Chetwynd, Bart.; succeeded to the title on the 13th October 1898; Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of Volunteers, Royals Welch Fusiliers; founded the Gaiety Theatre at Plas Newydd in 1901; d. 14th March 1905 at the Royal Hotel, Monte Carlo.
- Charles Henry Alexander, 9th Baronet and 6th Marquess of Anglesey, born 14 April 1885, succeeded his cousin Henry Cecil Paget as Marquess of Anglesey, 14 March 1905; educated at Eton, 1898-1902 and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards, 1905-1907; transferred to the reserve of Officers of the Royal Horse Guards, 1907; Mayor of Burton-Upon Trent, 1911; married, 3 August 1912 to Lady Victoria Marjorie Manners (d. 3 November 1946), daughter of the 8th Duke of Rutland and had issue :

Charles Henry served in the First World War as aide-de-camp to the general officer commanding the British troops in Egypt, 1915-1916, as assistant miitary secretary to the commander in chief in Ireland, 1916-1918 and as aide-de-camp at the War Office 1918. He also served as Lord Chamberlain of Queen Mary's household from 1922, G.C.V.O., 1928.
- Marjorie, Lady Anglesey (nee Manners), married the 6th Marquess of Anglesey in 1912. She was the daughter of the 8th Duke of Rutland. She died in 1946.
- Lady Caroline Duff (nee Paget), was the eldest daughter of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey. She was born in 1913, christened Alexandra Mary Caroline Cecilia; actress (as Caroline Bayly) and socialite. She married Sir Michael Duff, Bt., 1949 and adopted son, Charles David. She died in 1976. |
