Description | Appointment by Richard, Lord Vaughan, Earl of Carberry, Lord Lieutenant of Wales, of Griffith Williams Esq. as Deputy Lieutenant of co. Caernarvon. Attached: Copy of the letters patent of Charles II (dated December 21, 1660 at Westminster) appointing the said Earl of Carberry Lord Lieutenant of Wales. Cataloguers note on the date of the document: The appointment of Griffith Williams bears the date: the second day of March in the twelfth year of the reign of Charles II. This cannot be accepted as it would place the document in the period immediately before the restoration of Charles II. The twelfth year of Charles II was deemed to have begun on January 30, 1660, but he was not proclaimed king until May 5. The letters patent of the king appointing the Earl of Carberry Lord Lieutenant of Wales is dated December 21, 1660 and is described in the appointment as bearing date ‘the one and twentieth day of December last past.’ So the date of the appointment must be March 2 in the thirteenth year of Charles II. |
