TeitlThe Anglesey Militia
DisgrifiadThese papers supply a detailed account of the military organisation of the county during a critical period in the nation's history. They comprise largely correspondence between the Lord Lieutenant of Anglesey (Henry, Earl of Uxbridge, and later the 1st Marquess of Anglesey) or his chief agent John Sanderson, and the War Office, on matters such as the pay, equipment, strength and training of the corps. War Office circulars (a few signed by such famous figures as Palmerston, Robert Peel, Sidmouth, John Russell) bulk large in the collection; so do copies of the carious Acts relating to the local militia in this period. The fear of invasion which gripped the country in 1804 is reflected in the steady stream of instruction for, amongst other things, the erection of beacons on Holyhead and Bodafon mountains; for the requisitioning of waggons and carts for moving the militia to particular vantage points on the coast; for a return of live nad dead stock on the island; and for the appointment of special constable to maintain order among the civil population
