Description | Williams, with the Earl's help had already obtained the post for two of his sons in succession, but in his efforts to preserve it as a family monopoly, he appears to have offended Uxbridge, who regarded the nomination as a falling within his patronage (1976-1990). 1991-1994 are four sents of papers relative to claims for pay and prixe money due to Anglesey seamen, and submitted by the claimants to the Earl of Uxbridge for his intervention on their behalf with the Naval authorities. In 1996 we have a pitiful appeal for financial aid from a poor clergyman, Morgan Williams of Eglwyswrw near Cardigan, destined throughout his life to exist on the miserable stipends derived from small curacies in the diocese of St Davids. He refers to himself as the author of the "Treasury of Theological Knowledge", (the Cardiff Library Catalogue, p. 522, described him as of Carmarthen and mentions two other works by him : "Collecteana - a literary miscellany (1820-3) and "Collectaneous Epitaphs" (1823). There is a note by Sanderson on the back of the letter showing that a bank note for £5 was sent to him. |
