TeitlCoaching and postal facilities in Anglesey
DisgrifiadJohn Huges, an enterprising publican of Amlwch seeks Sanderson's support for the establishment of a coaching and mail service between Amlwch (via Llangefni and Llannerch-y-medd) and a point on the new Holyhead Road, the success of the venture, however, to be conditional on his being allowed to carry the Mona Mine Bags, at present entrusted to the postmistress at Gwyndy. This threatened infringement of a long-standing monopoly causes the latter grave concern, which takes all of Sanderson's wonted tact to remove (2434-2445). Meanwhile, there are complaints from all quarters about the unsatisfactory arrangements for the conveyance of mail to those parts of the island not served by the new road, and especially the populous areas of Llangefni, Llannerch-y-medd and Amlwch. The Anglesey mail bags were delivered by provate messenger from Bangor Ferry to the post office at Gwyndy - an arrangement considered convenient by the G.P.O. authorities, with whom the Marquess attempts to intervene, but with no success (2446-2455). John Huges puts forward a new proposal - a daily coach service from Amlwch to Bangor Ferry to meet the Liverpool packets; hopes that the Postal authorities can be persuaded to let him carry the mails. This like the original scheme, meets with little encouragement; all that the G.P.O. can offer arr hopes of a better service when the new Menai Bridge is opened (2456-2466)
