TeitlThe Coal Duty in North Wales
DisgrifiadRelating to the agitation to secure the prolongment of the exemption from duty of coal and culm carried coastwise in the Principality; include a copy of a petition to Parliament on the subject, sent up from Caernarvon, and a reference to a similar petition from Pwllheli. One of the interersting and telling points made by the Caernarvon petitioners was that a relief from duty would encourage the proprietors of slate quarries to resort to the use of steam engines, thereby increasing the production of slates, "and from the comparative high ad valorem duty on theat article, a trifling addition to the present supply would more than counterbalanmce any deficiency which might occur in the duty on coal and culm.
