Date3 January 1784
AdminHistoryDuring the election of 1784 in Caernarfonshire Lord Penrhyn canvassed very briskly until news came that the Caernarvonshire gentry were much displeased with his conduct at the last election, when he went stright to Baron Hill withour canvassing any of them. Counsellor (John) Parry's friends are said to be the Bishop Lord Bulkeley, Mr Griffiths of Brynodol and Counsellor Price, Lord Newborough's agent, canvasses the latter's interest for Parry, "which is a strange turn as Lord Newborough declared himself a candidate in the last election again against Parry. From Anglesey there are reports of feverish activity amongst the principal electors - consultations and "cabinet councils" at Baron Hill and Henblas. Out of all this emerges the rumour that Mr Meyrick is to have the borough of Beaumaris in the next election and is to support Lord Bulkeley in the county, and thenceforward he and Bulkeley are to divide and take the borough and county alternately between them.
(Actually it was Sir Nicholas Bayly who went in for Anglesey, defeating Meyrick; while the borough seat was taken by the Hon. Hugh Fortescue, son of the 2nd Lord Fortescue and son-in-law of George Grenville).
