Disgrifiad | A certain W.Williams, who states he is temporarily residing in Anglesey for the sake of his health, makes serious allegations to the Secretary for War of improper proceedings at the late ballotting at Llangefni for men to serve in the County Militia. He accuses one Sparrow, a surgeon, of accepting bribes from farmers and tradesmen in the parish of Pentraeth to exempt their sons from service, notwithstanding the fact that some of them, whose names he appends, are nearly six feet tall and totally fit. The Lord Lieutenants is instructed to make an immediate enquiry into the truth of such allegations (847, 848). According to a treturn to the Privy Council dated 3 December 1802, there are 2899 men in Anglesey between the ages of 18 and 45, of whom, 2047 are liable for service, the remainder being exempt (849) |
