TeitlPapers regarding the candidates for the vacancy
DisgrifiadThere were six candidated for the vacancy caused by the latter event : D.L. Williams, curate of Newborough; E. Williams-Mason, perpetual curate of Bodewryd; James Hughes, Rector of Llanrhyddlad, Hugh Prichard of Dinam and William Wynne Williams, curate of Llangeinwen. But before the MArquess has had time to consider their applications and make a recommendation, the Lord Chancellor, acting upon advice from another quarter undisclosed, had appointed the Rev. David Jeffreys, a Southwalian, but albeit "a zealous active Clerygyman, a perfect Welshmen, soundly orthodox in his principles, and ...likely to become a most valuable Pastor in Newborough." (1861). Such confidence was, it appears, a trifle misplaced, for as it turned out, Jeffreys throughout his 16 years at Newborough held only one service a Sunday - Matins - there. (see Bangor Ms 6453 : R. Rhys Hughes : Biographical Epitomes of the Clergy of the Diocese of Bangor)
