TitlePapers relating to the Llangadwaladr Crown living
DescriptionIn the event of the death of the incumbent, Lewis Hughes, who was reported to be mortally ill in July 1823, Lord Anglesey promises Owen Putland Meyrick of Bodorgan to recommend the latter's protege John Hughes Williams, curate of Llangadwaladr, being "sensible of the great advantage it is to all parties that the minister of a parish should be upon the most friendly terms with the principal proprietors in it" (1796). Bishop Majendie, however, has his doubts as to the suitability of the candidate, and brings to his Lordship's notice " a moral taint of an objectionable nature that must operate against the hopes of John Williams" (1808). At the same time he assures Meyrick that he will not "thwart any influence" the latter might think propert to exercise on his nominee's behalf (1814). Meanwhile, between now and the death of Lewis Hughes in February of the following year, four other candidates make their appearance : William Lloyd, Rector of Llanengan, John Lewis, Rector of Llanfechell, John Ellis, Rector of Llanbadrig and Robert Williams, Rector of Beaumaris, the last having the support of Sir Richard Williams Bulkeley and Sir Robert Williams of Friars. However, the Marquess' original recommendation prevails with the Lord Chancellor, and Hughes Williams is duly inducted to the living on April 30th.
