DescriptionIn 2236 and 2239 two old soldiers seek recognition of their services. Edward Edwards of Beaumaris has visions of becoming indoor watchman in the Stamp Office of Somerset House (2240). The secretary of the Honourable and Loyal Society of Ancient Britons writes to Sir Frederick Paget from the Welsh School House in Grays Inn Road, inviting him to become a Vice-President of the society and to help the latter in the good work it is doing for poor Welsh children (2242). Robert Lloyd of Tregaian, "tired of a country life" and "anxious to be afloat once more" begs the Marquess to get him a naval command on the West Indies Station (2248) 2254 and 2262 being news of the new lighthouse to be erected at Tryn Du; while in 2257 J.W. Thomas (Arfonwyson) of Bangor seeks subscribers for his newly-pubished "Glossary on the Roots and Derivations of the Welsh Language" (Geiriadur Cymreig a Seisonig a Chydymaith i'r Ysgol Sabbathawl).
Encouraged by the handsome patronage received from Plas Newydd, he reappears lates as a suitor for an excise post (2260). He was, however, destined for much bigger things, and his prowess as a mathematician brought him to the notice of the authorities at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where he was appointed superintendent
