AdminHistory | A lease of the site (Tir Bayly) was granted to Griffith Davies, shopkeeper of Caernarvon and others (including some Liverpool gentlemen) in 1836. They worked the quarry until 1842 when, largely owing to a tedious dispute concerning a right of way over some land belonging to Assheton Smith of Vaenol, they were forced to re-sell the lease to Lord Anglesey at the latter's valuation. In 1853 a new lease of the quarry is applied for by one Callender acting on behalf of a London Company; his application, however, is turned down on the advice of C.H. Evans who suspects him to be in league with Edward Owen of the firm of Owens & Co. whom the Marquess had ejected from Gallt y Llan in 1852 (see PN/I/3138-3182). It was not until 1863 that a lease was finally granted, and that to a Birkenhead company found by one Joseph Janion. |
