Description | Home Farm was, at the turn of the century, the farming land adjacent to Plas Newydd mansion, its productivity then being dictated primarily by estate requirements. A 'Stud Farm' flourished for some years.
From around 1915 onwards, however, Home Farm was let to tenants, and smaller farms and parts of farms was constantly being acquired and disposed of, so that around the nucleus lay an ever-fluctuating border - especially so when short-term acquisitions of additional land for specific agricultural purposes (grazing, for example) were necessary. It is therefore not surprising that the relevant records contain a variety of titles for this unit (e.g. 'Plas Newydd Home Farm, 'Home Farm); for clarity's sake, this list uses the title 'Home Farm', except where quoting.
Home Farm was a tenant-run unit continued until the end of World War II, during which period it was farmed intensively in contribution to the war effort. Thereafter the 7th Marquess became actively engaged in its farming, dollowing the precedent set by his father.
By the Fifties, however, the operation had scaled down considerably and productivity decreased, a fact reflected in that 1954 is the last year to be covered by the records found in this group. |
