Description | These are subdivided as follows :
Caernarvon County : These consist of the poll books of the 1768 and 1774 elections, several n18th century lists of free holders, some of them rather dilapidated, a 1790 election song, canvassing letters in several elections and a fragment of the 1795-1796 election account
Caernarvon Boroughs : The poll books for one borough election have also been preserved, that of 1722. Hugh Ellis seems to have acted in the interest of Lord Uxbridge in the boroughs, and the canvassing letters and the accounts and papers dealing with the creation of burgesses, all covering the later years of 18th century, reflect his efforts. With the exceoption of a list of Pwllheli burgesses from 1781 to 1831, the remainder of the group deals with the notable eve-of-reform election of 1831, and that of 1835. The strenuous contest of 1831 is well represented by placard, addresses, election songs and committee lists, and that of 1835 contains evidence of the activities of Dr O.O. Roberts
Generalia : Within this group have been included various letters touching directly or indirectly upon election matters, together with the resolutions of public meetings in Caernarvon and Anglesey on such matters as the Corn Laws and the Catholic claims. |
