AdminHistory | This is an interesting example of one of the 'nouveau riche' of the Napoleonic war period purchasing an estate in Wales, where estates were considered cheap. One Joseph Huddart, later Sir Joseph, purchased the Brynkir estate in Penmorfa, Cricieth, Llanllyfni and Llanaelhaearn, previously held by the famous Colonel Wardle and more than one document among these papers conveys the impression of a new owner settling in. It appears as if John Evans did all the legal work for the new proprietor in the way of drawing up conveyances, leases, distress notices and safeguarding his interests under the Nevin enclosure act. One or two of the papers reflect his concern with the roads of the district and this is further illustrated by some of the turnpike trust papers. Much intimate detail of the economy of the estate is given in the letters of the estate agent over a hundred of which have been preserved. |
