Letters from Sir John Hanmer, Bart. M.P. for the boroughs of Flint from 1847 to 1872 when he was raised to the peerage as Lord Hanmer. Great friendship with R.E.; consulted him continually; carefully explained his voting and not voting in the House ( e.g. no. 20, 4 November 1868). Generous regarding chapel leases (no. 25). Expressed his views freely in letters - he points out the refractoriness of nonconformist opposition to Forster's Education Bill of 1870 (nod. 28 and 47); he had very definite and rather unorthodox ideas about Dissestalblishment (nos. 32 and 40); he abhorred the "Birmingham Cabals" of 1873 under the leadership of Joseph Chamberlain (no. 45). The most piquant letter is undoubtedly no. 36 (29 March 1871) in which he treats Dr Charles of Aberystwyth with scant respect and laughs to scorn the proposed College at Aberystwyth.
