1581 - Letters and papers concerning the arrest and court martial of Lieut. Col. James Hughes on the charge of having absented himself without leave from his regiment then stationed in France. It appears that Hughes had been invited by the freemen of the borough of Grantham to offer himself as a candidate for Parliament in the 1818 election and duly made application for leave, the granting of which was inordinately delayed. The court acquitted him, being of the opinion "that he is guilty of having absented himself before the due receipt of his leave of absence, but taking into consideration that it was duly expected that it did in fact arrive before his departure with the urgent circumstances of the case."
