1884 December 1 to 1885 March 23 From W W K at Kimberley. The purchase of Wynn Hall; provision for Minnie; the great heat at Kimberley; invites "John" (not the addressee) to come out to join him. Further money matters; is determined to purchase Wynn Hall; temperatures of 130 degrees in the shade; has acquired some animal skins. Has sent power of attorney to J K; events at Kimberley; the opinion of the Dutch; the British Government "cursed & despised" throughout South Africa; fever among the troops; conditions and prices locally; controversies at home; importance of his work at Kimberley; money matters. Inertia of the Colonial Government; fortunes easily made at Kimberley. Regrets that J K has "gone to Higsons" [vide supra]. If he cannot have his arrangements re. Wynn Hall carried out, he will bring Minnie and the family out of Cape for good; much about money; John is doing well, according to Higsons; W W K's responsibilities in the Colony as the "English Engineer"; etc. |
