TeitlLetters from John James at Quimper (Brittany), Cowbridge (co. Glam) and Swansea, to his parents at King Street, Wrexham
DisgrifiadAs a Bible Society enthusiast, he is on a preaching tour with a Mr Phillips. In the first letter, from Quimper (which he has reached after a full week's journey), there is an account of meetings, distinguished congregations, etc. The main sequence thus from 11 June to 22 June : his unobtrusive departure; Bible meetings galore; his journey to Cowbridge; inn accommodation; descriptions of Cardiff and Newport; an account of the Chartists' attack on Newport; his shaky health; his 3-day journey (32 miles) from Cowbridge to Swansea (shipping population, smoke pollution, etc.); admits that "these Bible meetings are a bore"; very fond messages to his "dear little girls"; is heading for Llanelli, "where lives David Rees, the eminent Dissenter", then Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Hirwaun and Hay; very detailed descriptions of his preaching engagements and entertainments; etc.
