DescriptionThis folder includes various correspondence relating to the Penrhyn Quarries Limited. Various topics discussed in the various correspondence are things such as an exhibition at the Caernarvonshire County Record Office and letters relating to the acceptance of deposits from Gwynedd County Council Area Record Office in 1983 with the Additional Penrhyn Quarry Papers (Penrhyn Strikes) with a document list.. There are a few administrative letters relating to the collection and access conditions relating to this collection. There are a few letters addressed to Lady Janet asking for permission to see ‘barred’ records at the record office. There are numerous letters from workers and widows thanking Lady Janet for the gift of retirement and a staff pension. There are also many letters of sympathy relating to the destruction of the Quarry Mill during a fire followed by a report from the Chief Fire Officer Hutchinson regarding the incident.
Within this folder is a small folder titled ‘Press Kit- The Formal Opening of the New Slate Making and Architectural Departments by the Right Honourable Cledwyn Hughes, M.P Secretary of State for Wales, Friday the 09th of June 1967.’ This folder contains numerous administrative correspondence between the Quarry and Cledwyn Hughes relating to his visit for the event, a 1968 Architectural Brochure for Penrhyn Quarries Limited and various black and white photographs with captions attached to some of them, possibly for the event. There are event leaflets with the history and development of the Quarry and three newspaper cuttings from the day.
This folder also contains a handwritten list of ships, a copy of a newspaper article regarding an old Bangor ship Mary B Mitchell ‘a fine three master Schooner belonging to Lord Penrhyn’s fleet of ships employed in the conveying slate from the quarries in Bethesda to all part of Britain and abroad’ and a photograph of Henry Dawkins and his family by Richard Brompton (1773) commissioned for the dining room of Standlynch House.
