DescriptionThe testator makes the following monetary bequests : to his brother Thomas Hodges, £100 sterling; to his sister Sarah Burrowes, £100 sterling; to his son in law Rowland Williams, Esq. £50 Jamaica; to John Campbell of the parish of St. Elizabeth, £50 Jamaica; to his kinsman Johns Gale, £50 Jamaica; to his overseer John Steere, £20 Jamaica; to his negro woman Grace who nursed his son Joseph Andries Hodges, 40s Jamaica p.a. for the term of her life; to his sister Sarah Burrowes £50 sterling p.a. "Separate and apart from her husband", to his nephews Thomas and Joseph Burrowes £100 sterling each "towards putting them out apprentices" and to his nephew John Hodges the son of Thomas Hodges £300 sterling. He bequeaths his coach and chaise, 8 coach horses, £300 Jamaica for life and the use of his house at Luana together with all his household furniture, 6 house negroes, a coachman and a postilion to his wife Anna Hodges. He leaves £2000 sterling to his daughter Bonella Hodges together with a sum of £25 Jamaica p.a. to be paid to her by his sons Joseph and Nathaniel until she is 10 years old and £50 sterling p.a. from the age of 10 to the age of 21 or until the day of her marriage. He leaves all the sums of money due to him from the estate of Florentius Vassall to his wife and all his goods credits and stock in Great Britain, in the hands of his factos in Jamaica or at sea to his sons Joseph and Nathaniel Hodges. He leaves his real and personal estate "lying to the Westward of Middle Quarters or being at a place commonly called Lewana or Lewanna Plantation" to his son Nathaniel Hodges. He leaves his real and personal estate "lying to the Eastward of Middle Quarters at a Place Commonly called Lacovia or Lacovia Plantation to his son Joseph Andreis Hodges. He directs that if his wife should be with child at the time of his death then such a child is to be given £2000 by his executors at the age of 21. He also directs that if either of his sons die without issue then the lands bequeathed to such a brother are to pass to the other, and if both die without issue then all the lands are to go to Bonnella Hodges. He names his sons as his executors when they reach the age of 17, and his brother Thomas Hodges to be executor of that part of his will which concerns Joseph Hodges. He also appoints Thomas Hodges to be the guardian of Joseph Hodges. He names his wife as executrix of that part of his will which concerns his son Nathaniel and his daughter Bonnella and appoints her to be their guardian. [See also PFA/5/48]
