TitleLetter from Thomas Callcott at Kingsbridge to Thomas James at Wear, near Wem, Salop
DescriptionAcknowledges receipt of an "admonitory Letter"; his motives for setting up as a teacher in a remote place where there were already 2 schoolmasters and 8 schoolmistresses; is not anxious about his debts, and is sure that "Friends would rather wait seven Years for their Money than wish me to injure myself by a premature Payment" (!); an improvement is on the way - he will shortly be able to cease work at 7 pm each day, with an hour off during it ! His day school has 17 scholars (attending irregularly) at 8/= per quarter, for "Writing and Cyphering", and 4 "headers" at 5/3 per qr; his evening school has 14 pupils at 4/= per qr, and 5 geography pupils at 5/3 per qr. There follows a page of pious outpourings, somewhat marred by his guarded admission of spiritual indifference at times. He cringes at last to a fulsome and faintly fawning conclusion.
